    How about a Friday Five?

    (Annnnd crickets)

Somewhere, someone is doing jazz hands and giving me an imaginary high five because they are so excited. Hint: They are at my mom’s house.

    1.Cotton Candy Grapes

    IMG_8161

We finally found some at Fresh Market. G calls grocery store samples “taste tests”… he slammed three of them before I could stop him. We both really liked them, but don’t let the name fool you. Yes, they do taste like cotton candy for a hot second. After that, they taste like grapes. If you are really jonesing for cotton candy, I’d suggest going to the fair. If you want weird grapes that momentarily taste like cotton candy, this strange fruit is for you. And yes, I checked it off the list even though it is practically Fall.

Practically Fall, if you consult the calendar. If you walk outside, it is a different story. Every year around this time, I seriously try to talk SK into moving. I can handle living in a sauna during July and August, but I can’t take feeling like I’m in the deep pits of Hell in September. So I try to trick myself into thinking the season has changed by surrounding myself with my favorite things about Fall…

Y’all. If I see one more picture of a pumpkin spice latte on Instagram, I’m going to break down and order one. Then I am going to submerge my iPhone in it so I don’t have to see one more picture of a pumpkin spice latte on Instagram.

If you are in the minority and can’t drink hot pumpkin flavored coffee when it is 110 degrees and 100% humidity, try one of these…

    2. Coco Latte

    IMG_8164

So good. I usually don’t drink coffee after 10 am, but had to have a couple of these in the late afternoon this week. We need all the energy we can get to keep pretending it is Fall. And hello… coconut water. Healthy, healthy, healthy.

    3. Candy Corn Trail Mix

    IMG_3830

As cousin Heather mentioned in a comment on the last post, it is time for candy corn trail mix. Holla. I just mixed up a batch. I can’t guarantee you will love this if you use any candy corn other than Brach’s. Brach’s rocks.

    4. Animal prints

Animal prints can’t stop and won’t stop. I bought a pair of animal print pants in London in 1999. I wouldn’t have described them as timeless back then, but boy have they proved me wrong. I think that was the tip of my downward, animal print spiral. I also bought a black coat with a detachable fur collar and black knee boots that are still “in” today. Either styles haven’t changed much in the last 14 years, or everything has come back around. I feel ancient for typing that last sentence. We’ll move on if someone will bring me my walker.

These animal print, pointy toe flats from Gap are super cute and comfy. They are sold out online but this pair is cute too.

    IMG_8448

And I lurrrrrved this animal print sweater at Anthropologie but did not purchase it because I’m waiting for it to go on sale. Oh and it is 110 degrees and 100% humidity here.

    IMG_8146

But, I did get this cute cardi at Target because it was on sale, and they had the AC kickin.

    5. Dark nails

In honor of fake Fall, I broke out the Lincoln Park After Dark. It is my all time favorite nail polish, but I only use it September-November. If it is “not cool” anymore, please don’t tell me. If it was “never cool,” don’t tell me that either. I am aware it extremely uncool to take a picture of your man hand in the mirror.

Speaking of cool, I’m burning up.

    It ain’t Fall, y’all.

  • summer’s list

At the beginning of summer, we made a list of things we wanted to do.

    IMG_9875

I’m happy that we checked most things off. We had a camp out with Lily and made more s’mores than anyone could possibly eat.

Speaking of Lily, she spends a few days with us every summer. We call it “Lily Weekend” or “Wowie Weekend”… we are very creative around here. We went shopping, out to eat, to church and brunch, to a birthday party and the Mississippi Children’s Museum and had loads of fun around the house. They played water balloon baseball, slipped and slid, had a silly string color run and made homemade strawberry ice cream. Lily and I also got to watch Miss Mississippi together which was nice since my usual companions aren’t big on pageants.

Stevie took Wells to play golf and he really enjoyed it. Wells liked it too.

    IMG_2738

Maybe he will pick it up. A very fancy lady once told me, “Daaaaarling, every child should know at least one country club sport.” I have a feeling they don’t play water balloon baseball at country clubs.

There were lots of things that should have been on the list so I could check them off. Wells went to a couple of camps and G had a soccer camp. And we grew lots of veggies in our little garden. We are so organic.

There were lots of trips to the pool. Uncle Clay taught G how to dive. And that turned into various other diving board tricks. And the boys spent a week with my parents so they could go with Nan to vacation Bible school. Aunt Yaya took them to play laser tag which pretty much trumped everything else they got to do during summer break.

And to wrap it up, a trip to “Chunky Jesus” with friends…

    IMG_9224

As for things we didn’t check off… the ever elusive lightening bugs. You see them for a hot second and they get lighter and lighter until they are invisible. Kidding. I am just a terrible speller.

    IMG_9872

A few weeks ago while everyone was night swimming, My Daddy and I tried our hardest to catch a lightning bug for the boys. Those little fellas have gotten fast. Or maybe we have just gotten slow. Or maybe they really are lightening bugs.

We didn’t go fishing. But we do have a fish that I have managed to keep alive for the last 10 months so that should count for something. And by keep alive, I mean he refuses to die.

Poor little G. His only request was to try new fruits. How did I let that slip through the cracks? There are a few hours left in August… I need to secure some strange fruit STAT.

I hope you have a great Labor Day!

  • friday four

For most people, Friday’s just the day before the weekend (name that movie). But for Wowie, Friday is blog day. And Friday Four day. Here we go…

    1. Graham’s Good and Bad News

Graham scribbled a few lines on a piece of paper and then assembled us all for an announcement…

I have some good news and some bad news. First, the good news. We are getting a hot tub.

Bad news. We’re not getting a dog.

We aren’t getting a hot tub or a dog. Haven’t even discussed it. I’m not sure where that kid comes up with this stuff. Although I really, REALLY want an outdoor shower. Like this one…

    shower 2

It is more practical than a hot tub and less work than a dog. Moving on…

    2. Easy Weeknight Pasta

    IMG_9943

I’ve made this twice, and it is so good.

1 package of diced pancetta (in the deli section) or chopped bacon
    2-3 chopped green onions
    1 1/2 tsp minced garlic
    olive oil
    salt and pepper

    Ditalini or Elbow pasta
    grated parmesean

Cook the pasta according to package directions. Saute the pancetta or bacon over medium heat. After it is slightly browned, add the onion, garlic and about a tablespoon of olive oil. Add a little salt and pepper. When the onions have cooked down a bit, turn off the burner. Add the hot pasta directly to the pan. Also add about a half a cup of the pasta water. Grate parmesean over the top and dig in. Seriously. How easy is that. Graham said, “This is the goodest thing I have ever ate.” Or maybe that was Steve.

    3. Fresh Sugar Cherry

    IMG_9818

Woo hoo… a new Fresh Sugar Lip color. This one is more red than Passion and less orange than Coral. I love it. But, they could probably launch one called Baby Poop and I would buy it.

    4. Gap Camo Skinny Jeans

The ole Gap was having 30% off earlier this week, and I couldn’t resist these camo skinny jeans.

    cn6771295

Duck Dynasty is the new black. Everyone needs camo pants, Jack.

It’s time to call a spade a spade. Friday Four is now Five thanks to A. Liz and her link up. Seriously, y’all check out her post and all the other Five on Friday links.

    5. The original Friday Four

Everything on my first list is still on current rotation around here. I took the summer off from Body Jam but started back a couple of weeks ago. I am seriously drenched when I leave there.

    See? Outdoor shower. Totally practical.

    I work out.
